The 12th National Conference

Multidisciplinary care in Parkinson's disease and parkinsonism
from science to practice conference

Held at the Royal College of Physicians, London

4th July 2007

The British Geriatrics Society Parkinson's Disease Special Interest Group's 12th annual conference focused on the 'from science to practice' theme. The programme recognised the fact that, while health and social care professionals all have their own area of expertise, effective team work requires an understanding of what is happening within other fields and how ideas are changing. The meeting considered what is new in multidisciplinary care and provided an update on Parkinson's related research, new clinical resources and service/training initiatives.

The day began by looking at current controversies relating to the medical care of Parkinson's. This was followed by dedicated forums of disciplines involved in the condition's management – physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, and Parkinson's disease specialist nursing.

Dr Bastian Bloem, Medical Director of the Parkinson's Centre Nijmegen (ParC) in the Netherlands, also described the Dutch experience of setting up an integrated care network for Parkinson's families.

This was followed by a forum on the neuropsychiatric aspects of Parkinson's, including halluncinations, which can be particularly challenging in Parkinson's disease and parkinsonism.

The conference concluded with a presentation by Professor Derick Wade, Consultant/Professor in Neurological Rehabilitation and Clinical Director, Oxford Centre for Enablement, on multidisciplinary rehabilitation in Parkinson's and the recent NICE guidelines.

As in previous years, posters were an important part of the day and small prizes were awarded to the best three presentations.
