Multidisciplinary care in Parkinson's disease and parkinsonism from science to practice - the 10th National Conference

15th July 2004 - Royal College of Physicians, London

Organised by MEP Ltd for the British Geriatrics Society Parkinson's Disease Special Interest Group

Getting the drugs right is an absolute pre-requisite for rehabilitation in Parkinson's - especially in patients with 'on/off' fluctuations. This multidisciplinary conference, the tenth in the 'from science to practice' series, examined why this challenging problem develops and investigated current and future management strategies. Patient and carer perspectives on living with erratic swings in drug response and the breadth of 'on/off' symtomatology were also highlighted.

The RESCUE Project has been at the forefront of putting science into the practice of physiotherapy for Parkinson's. This conference considered the pathophysiology of freezing of gait and updated on the RESCUE based UK guidelines for optimising cueing therapy.

Many difficulties experienced by patients are common to other chronic illnesses. The Essence of Care framework looks at nine aspects of care identified by patients and carers as fundamental to their experience of health care. Using the example of continence the conference also explored how this initiative may help to improve what can be offered in the context of Parkinson's.
