This multidisciplinary conference, the ninth in the 'from science to practice' series organised by the British Geriatrics Society, revisited two difficult areas for clinical practice. The morning session reviewed the current research on why people with Parkinson's disease fall and what can be done about it. This included the significance of visuospatial function, which is affected in Parkinson's disease, and right- and left-sided differences.
The afternoon session concentrated on palliative care, starting with the ethical and legal framework for end-of-life decisions and then moving on to issues surrounding PEG feeding, issues affecting carers, and how the newly developed care pathway for the last days of life applies to people with Parkinson's and parkinsonism. The final session explored the role of the Parkinson's disease nurse specialist.
